Welcome to my first fishing report! The year has been, for the most part, slow. Fishing on Winnipesaukee hasn't been the best, but some fish are being caught. This past weekend was the best fishing weekend so far, with several people having to come back for more bait. The white perch were hitting good as were the rainbows and lakers. The smaller lakes and ponds were hot and plenty of perch, pickerel, bass and trout were landed. My brother and I fished a small lake in Freedom yesterday, Tuesday the 13th, and had great success. Two stunning rainbows were pulled up along with some brook trout, perch, pickerel and a nice largemouth bass. Small emerald shiners worked the best with small smelts coming in at a close second. Copper colored jigs kept the action going between flags.
I've heard many reports of monster salmon being hooked and properly released this winter. The spring fishing should be phenomenal so long as there is enough current in the rivers to bring the smelts in. With the clocks changing a month earlier this year, there should be plenty of time to hit roadside hotspots after work.
The best ice fishing is upon us. Warm days and fast action make it perfect to get the family out on the ice. There is still plenty of ice to be found, although keep an eye out for open water where spring holes and pressure ridges have eroded the ice. The best places to find ice are the smaller lakes and ponds.
Good Luck Fishing!
