So far the salmon have been reluctant to show
themselves. A few fish have been caught over the past few days,
but not in the numbers that most of us would like to see. Opening
moring saw smaller crowds than expected with only four fish being
caught before 9 A.M. A few fish were caught in the evening, and
no fish that I heard of on Monday. The fish that are being caught
have all been on live bait, mostly smelts trolled slow. We have
lost a lot of ice over the past few days but the bay is still socked
right in. Hopefully by this weekend we will have enough room out
there for a few boats to manuever around. Feel free to give us a
call before you come out for a more up to date report.
GET READY FOR SALMON! MARCH 30, 2007
April 1st is only two days away! There have been
a few fish spotted in the river next to the docks, but most of them
are still out in the deeper water. The ice is still thick, and the
lack of current coming down the Smith River is keeping it in close.
The boat launch in Back Bay is still frozen as of this morning and
the ramp at the town docks is blocked by a snowbank. Canoes and
kayaks can still put in at the docks, but trailered boats might
have a problem. There really isn't enough water for trolling, but
having a small cartop boat can help get away from the crowds.
Meal worms, crawlers and live smelt will be the
bait to use come Sunday morning. Small tube jigs in white or red
will be a common lure as will streamer flies such as the Grey Ghost
or Winnipesaukee Smelt. The key to catching fish on opening morning
is getting your bait or lure to the bottom. Drop shot rigs with
heavy sinkers will allow you to consistently fish a certain depth.
Adding a bullet weight to the line in front of your lure will help
to get down deep. And weighted, sinking fly lines will be neccessary
for those who are fishing streamers.
I'll post an update on Monday morning as to how
opening day went. The weather is looking good for Sunday, so get
out there and take advantage of it. If you do catch a fish, stop
by the store and we'll take your picture.
Good Luck Fishing!
